Herb Ritts
Herb Ritts was a famous photographer known for his nude and celebrity portraits work in Vogue and other iconic magazines. He was prominent in the late 70s and died in 2002. I would say that his work was very aesthetic and dramatic. The way his subjects posed had a great impact on his style of photography. In the second picture above, we can see the model being awkwardly contortioned to a giant metal chain. But the awkward pose gives off such strong emotions like the feeling of wanted to break through, or trying hard and just pain (and pleasure maybe) in general. I really like how he plays with the different shades and shadow and light to make an unconventional picture. I would qualify him as a post modern artist in his time but using the ideas of the Greek sculptures position.
He was also very prolific in the fashion industry and did the photoshoots of so many famous people like Madonna or Tom Cruise and landed up using his creative mind to direct multiple music videos. The first picture above is a photograph of Naomi Campbell for the Versace campaign in the 1990s. At that time, technology was thriving and there were multiple discoveries being mad while Y2K was being dreaded. He made Naomi pose and elevated her dress to make it look like a bulb shape to represent modernity, ingenuity.
